What is Instructional Coaching?
Instructional coaching is a field with promise and possibility. A successful school or district coaching model can create a powerful professional learning community committed to student success. The goal of school-based instructional coaching is to increase student learning by providing continuous, relevant and job-embedded support to teachers (Sweeney, 2010). In order to do so, schools employ a variety of instructional coaching models. However, not all models lead with a focus on evidence and student learning. Student-centered coaching is the model that embraces these practices and puts teachers in the best position to improve student learning. The University of Wisconsin-Madison is excited to offer a series of four courses that are dedicated to defining and enhancing the knowledge and skills of student-centered coaching.
Online Student-Centered Instructional Coaching Certificate Program
The course was thoughtfully laid out, and ideas and assignments were job specific and relevant to my professional practice. Most importantly accessibility to materials through an e-learning platform made it the perfect choice for me as an international educator looking for professional development in my practice." |
Student-centered coaching is about (1) setting specific targets for students that are grounded in the standards and content and (2) working together with educators to ensure that the targets are met (Sweeney, 2010). Read about our Certificate options to learn more about how to get involved.
Diane Sweeney's Student-Centered Coaching books are also integrated throughout our coursework. Check them out to learn more about this coaching model.

The quality of the materials and the rigor of the assignments have far exceeded my expectations for any online learning experience. The forum posts and the responses to assignments provided a virtual platform for learning with highly skilled colleagues from around the world. Learning about their perspectives and the context of their practice has expanded my insight into the field of coaching." |
